The train system and the Metro system here work great. The trains are modern, reliable and clean. You can usually get a seat. You rarely have to wait more than 5 minutes.
Some of the cars have silhouettes of big bicycles on the outside. These cars have fewer seat so there is space for bicycles and baby carriages. On the trains that go farther than the airport there are "quiet cars." How ice not to have to listen to someone else's' cell phone conversation.
Kudos to Denmark for having an efficient public transportation system.
The Biking Vikings
There are a LOT of bikes in Denmark. Everybody rides bikes everywhere. There are bike lanes in every street. There are special cars on subways and trains that are designed for bringing your bike onboard. The taxis have bike racks. Fewer than 10% of bike riders wear helmets.
You're Driving Me Danish
The sales tax on a car is 180%. That's right. If you buy a car in Denmark, you are basically buying it three times. And then you have to pay $8 per gallon for gas. That's why so many people ride bikes.
Despite the Danes' goal to make Copenhagen carbon neutral, you do not see very many of those tiny European cars. You see a lot of mid-size sedans and a lot of minivans. Most of them are black. You see very few SUV's, and no pickup trucks.
The drivers are not particularly polite to pedestrians.
